Introductions

Hello! My name is Eric and I am the Curious Cook (a title that I have so humbly granted myself). A second-year student at Oberlin College, I am an Art History and East Asian Studies double major, and am well on my way to becoming a functioning independent person. One hurdle blocking my ascent to the adult, however, (aside from my unwillingness to take responsibility for any form of cleaning) is my inability to feed myself. Sure I can toast a pop-tart or boil a packet of ramen, but the concept of the "meal" is something of an enigma and I wish to change that. I have always been somewhat of a foodie, which is something that I have inherited from my father and uncle who both love to be in the kitchen. In an attempt to become closer to them, as well as to be able to come one step closer to fulfilling my childhood fantasy of being a chef on the Food Network, I have decided to start this blog as a part of a project to teach myself to cook.

To do so, I am relying on Oberlin's weird liberal arts sensibilities, which are what make it great. One of these is the "Winter Term"—a time where students are encouraged to pursue their interests, traditionally with things like internships and research jobs. I, however, have taken advantage of this school sponsored period of free time to develop my relationship with the culinary arts and fulfill the desire I have to become more familiar with the minutiae of the kitchen. This winter I am back home in Cincinnati where I have set myself up with a pretty big task: run this blog (and give Julie&Julia a run for its money in the process), set a menu for each week, and actually cook the things I set out tohopefully with some degree of success. My goal with this project is to, first and foremost, become a better cook, while also growing closer to my family. I am so excited to share this journey and hope it inspires others to try new things or to do something they've always dreamt of.

Thanks and Enjoy!

Meal 17: Chicken Paella

Ah, paella. A meal that, when eaten, conjures the dulcet sounds of a Spanish guitar wafting through an open widow on a warm summer's eve in Barcelona. Maybe that's hyperbolic, but I just really enjoy paella as both a concept and a food; it is the Iberian cousin of risotto (one of my other favs) while also having a flavor profile that is so uniquely "paella". It is amazing, period. Moving past that uncomfortable love note to rice, I chose to make this dish because it was something that, in the few times I had tried it, I enjoyed. In addition to the yummy connotations I had with the meal, it also seemed to be pretty easy to make, from what the recipe purported, and that sealed the deal. I was actually very surprised how similar it was to the Chicken and Rice I had made a couple weeks ago, this similarity giving me a sense of comfort in what I was doing. And that ease translated into a meal that went off without a hitch. The one problem I did have was more equipment re...
